Artist Statement
My work explores the quiet emotional stories embedded in human relationships, shaped by the tension between filial duty and self-determination in my Korean and Middle-American heritage. Since 2016, I have focused on portraiture, using oil paint to create intimate representations of family and friends that capture vulnerability in everyday moments. Through careful attention to subtle expressions and body language, I aim to reveal the evolving nature of personal bonds, whether painting my grandparents at a family gathering or my queer friends in moments of quiet intimacy.
Rooted in traditional techniques from self-study and my current atelier training, my practice combines technical precision with personal narrative. I use soft, atmospheric light and rich color to create an intimate mood, inviting viewers to reflect on the warmth and complexity of their own relationships. By examining both given and chosen family, I explore how cultural expectations, personal freedom, and memory intertwine to shape our lives.
